Choosing Frames and Lenses for Bifocal Glasses
Prescription bifocal glasses combine distance correction in the upper lens with a defined reading segment below. The bifocal lens design, frame height, prescription details and frame fit all influence how the finished eyeglasses work in daily use.
Choose Your Bifocal Lens Design
• Flat-Top bifocals provide a broad, clearly defined reading area for frequent close-up tasks.
• Round-Top bifocals use a smaller curved reading segment that may appear less prominent.
• Traditional lined bifocals have a visible segment line that makes the near-vision area easy to locate.
• Standard bifocal lenses focus primarily on distance and near vision rather than providing a dedicated intermediate zone.
Choose the Right Frame and Fit
• Select a bifocal-compatible frame with enough lens height for both the distance and reading zones.
• Provide a current prescription with an ADD value and accurate PD information.
• A stable frame fit helps keep the reading segment in a consistent viewing position.
• For long computer sessions, dedicated computer glasses or progressive lenses may be more suitable because traditional bifocals do not normally provide a dedicated intermediate zone.
FAQs
What are bifocal glasses used for?
Bifocal glasses provide two main vision corrections in one pair, usually distance vision and near vision. The upper portion of the lens is commonly used for seeing farther away, while the lower bifocal segment provides additional power for reading and other close-up tasks.
For more information about bifocal lens designs, prescriptions and frame selection, read our Bifocal Glasses Guide.
Are bifocal glasses better than progressive glasses?
Neither design is automatically better for everyone.
Bifocal glasses provide two clearly defined viewing zones, usually distance and near, while progressive lenses gradually change power across distance, intermediate and near vision without a visible line.
Bifocals may suit people who prefer a clearly defined reading segment. Progressives may be more convenient for people who regularly use intermediate distances such as computer screens.
For a detailed comparison, read Progressive Lenses vs Bifocals.
Can I order prescription bifocal glasses online?
Yes. Choose a bifocal-compatible frame, then select Bifocal during lens customization and provide your prescription details, including ADD and PD when required.
If you are unsure how to enter your prescription, upload the original prescription instead of estimating any values.
Do bifocal glasses have a visible line?
Traditional bifocal lenses usually have a visible line separating the distance and near portions of the lens. The line marks the change between the two lens powers and makes the reading segment easy to identify.
If you prefer a gradual, line-free design that also includes intermediate vision, progressive lenses are a different option to consider.
Can bifocal glasses be used for computer work?
They can, but traditional distance-and-near bifocals do not normally provide a dedicated intermediate zone for computer screens.
Depending on your monitor distance, prescription and working habits, progressive lenses or dedicated computer glasses may be more suitable for extended screen use.
