Instead of carrying the strongest prescription power across the entire lens in the same way as a conventional lens, a lenticular design concentrates the main correction within a defined optical area and uses a surrounding carrier to help control lens thickness, weight, and overall bulk.
For people whose prescriptions are strong enough that conventional high-index lenses may still be thick or heavy, lenticular eyeglass lenses offer another option. They can be made for strong minus prescriptions, strong plus prescriptions, and other high-power single-vision prescriptions that require more specialized lens planning.

What Are Lenticular Lenses?
Lenticular lenses are prescription lenses in which the main corrective power is concentrated within a smaller optical zone rather than extending across the entire lens in the same form.
The area surrounding the main prescription zone is commonly called the carrier. Depending on the prescription and lens design, the carrier avoids carrying the full high-power lens form all the way to the outer part of the frame.
This becomes useful with very strong prescriptions, where a conventional lens may require a large amount of lens material. By controlling where the strongest correction is placed, a lenticular design can reduce unnecessary lens volume and help make some high-power prescriptions lighter and less bulky.
It may also improve the cosmetic appearance of very strong prescription glasses when compared with a conventional lens that would otherwise be unusually thick.
Lenticular lenses do not all look the same. Prescription strength, optical-zone size, lens material, frame choice, pupillary distance, and the final optical design all influence the finished lens.
What Are Lenticular Lenses Used For?
Lenticular prescription lenses are mainly considered when prescription power is unusually high and lens thickness or weight remains an important concern.
They may be useful for very strong nearsighted or farsighted prescriptions, particularly when a conventional high-index lens may still be thicker or heavier than desired.

For that reason, lenticular lenses are better thought of as a specialty solution for very strong prescriptions, rather than simply the next step after choosing a 1.74 high-index lens.
How Do Lenticular Eyeglass Lenses Work?

With a conventional full-aperture prescription lens, the corrective lens form extends across the useful lens area.
With a lenticular lens, the strongest prescription is concentrated within a defined optical zone. The surrounding carrier reduces the amount of high-power lens material that would otherwise continue toward the outer part of the lens.
This can help manage:
- Edge thickness in very strong minus lenses
- Center thickness in very strong plus lenses
- Overall lens volume
- Lens weight
- The bulky appearance that can occur with extreme prescriptions

Minus Lenticular Lenses
Strong minus lenses, commonly used for high myopia, are thinner in the center and become progressively thicker toward the edges.
As prescription power increases, this edge thickness can become substantial, particularly when the frame is large or the pupil sits far from the geometric center of the lens.
A minus lenticular design reduces the amount of very thick peripheral lens material by concentrating the primary correction within a smaller optical area and using a surrounding carrier.
This is one reason frame selection matters so much with high myopia. A smaller, well-centered frame can often produce a more practical finished lens than a large or oversized frame.
Plus Lenticular Lenses
Strong plus lenses have a different thickness pattern. They are generally thickest toward the center.
A plus lenticular design concentrates the stronger plus correction within a smaller central optical zone while using a thinner surrounding carrier.
This reduces the amount of high-power lens material needed across the full frame and can make some very strong plus prescriptions lighter and less bulky.
Lenticular Lenses vs. High-Index Lenses
Lenticular lenses and high-index lenses are closely related in strong-prescription eyewear, but they describe two different things.
High-index refers to the lens material. A higher refractive index can provide the required prescription power with flatter lens surfaces and can often help reduce thickness.
Lenticular refers primarily to the lens design. It changes how the strongest prescription area is distributed across the finished lens.

Our most affordable lenticular material option. It can be considered when a lenticular design is needed but maximum thickness reduction is not the main priority.
1.60 Lenticular Lenses
A thinner and lighter step up that provides a practical balance between lens profile, optical performance, and price.
1.67 High-Index Lenticular Lenses
A high-index lenticular option for stronger prescriptions where further reduction in thickness and weight is important.
1.74 High-Index Lenticular Lenses
Our thinnest lenticular material option, intended for very strong prescriptions where minimizing lens thickness and weight is a major priority.

Lenticular Lenses vs. Progressive Lenses and Bifocals
Lenticular lenses, progressive lenses, and bifocals describe different aspects of prescription lens design.
A progressive lens contains multiple viewing powers within one lens, allowing the wearer to see at distance, intermediate, and near ranges without a visible dividing line.
Bifocals also provide more than one viewing power, usually separating distance and near vision into two distinct areas, often with a visible segment line.
A lenticular lens, by contrast, is primarily a design used to manage very strong prescription power by concentrating the main correction within a defined optical zone and using a surrounding carrier.

Lenticular Lenses for High Myopia
Lenticular lenses can be particularly relevant for people with very strong myopia because high-minus conventional lenses can become thick around the outer edges.
However, prescription power alone does not determine finished thickness or appearance.
Important factors include:
- Frame width and lens size
- Pupillary distance
- How well the pupil is centered within the frame
- Sphere and cylinder powers
- Lens index
- Lens shape and optical design
Before moving to a lenticular design, it is also worth considering the frame and conventional high-index options. For some strong prescriptions, a smaller full-rim frame combined with a suitable high-index material may already produce a good result.

Choosing Frames for Lenticular Glasses
For very strong prescriptions, the frame and the lens should be considered together.
There is no single frame style that works for every lenticular prescription, but a few practical principles can help.
Keep Lens Size Reasonable
Smaller or moderate lens dimensions generally require less lens material than very large frames. This can be particularly helpful with extreme prescriptions.
Keep the Eyes Well Centered
A frame that positions the pupils reasonably close to the center of the lenses can reduce unnecessary decentration and may help control finished thickness.
Consider Full-Rim Frames
Full-rim frames are often a practical starting point for very strong prescriptions because they support the lens around its perimeter and can make thicker edges less noticeable.
Be Careful With Oversized Frames
Oversized frames require larger lenses. With very strong prescriptions, that extra lens area can increase thickness, weight, or both.
Frame size and shape can also affect the cosmetic appearance of strong-prescription glasses. A well-chosen frame can make the finished lenses look more balanced while still meeting the optical requirements of the prescription.
This does not mean people with strong prescriptions have to choose a tiny or basic-looking frame. The goal is to find the best balance between style, comfort, optics, and prescription requirements.

Can Lenticular Lenses Be Photochromic?
Yes. Olet Optical currently allows eligible single-vision lenticular orders to be upgraded with photochromic lenses.
After choosing your lenticular lens index, continue to the optional Sunglasses Upgrade step. Current photochromic color options are:
- Gray
- Brown
Photochromic lenses remain relatively clear indoors and darken outdoors in response to light, making them convenient for customers who prefer one pair for both indoor and outdoor use.
If you want photochromic lenticular lenses, simply select the photochromic option during the online lens customization process.
Advantages of Lenticular Lenses
For a suitable prescription, a lenticular design can provide several practical advantages:
- Reduce excessive lens material in very strong prescriptions
- Help control edge thickness in strong minus prescriptions
- Help control center thickness in strong plus prescriptions
- Reduce overall lens volume in suitable designs
- Help reduce lens weight
- Work with higher-index lens materials
- Improve the appearance of some very strong prescription lenses by reducing excessive bulk
- Provide another option when conventional high-index lenses may still be too bulky

Limitations of Lenticular Lenses
Lenticular lenses can be very useful for the right prescription, but they are not automatically better than conventional high-index lenses.
Because the main corrective area is concentrated within a defined optical zone, the visual experience outside that area can differ from a conventional full-aperture lens.
The transition between the main prescription area and the carrier may also be visible, depending on the prescription and lens design. Appearance therefore needs to be considered along with thickness and weight.
Other considerations include:
- Accurate optical centering is important
- Frame selection can have a greater effect on the finished result
- The wearer may need time to become familiar with the lens design
- The finished appearance varies with prescription strength and lens construction
- A conventional high-index lens may still be the better option when it can provide acceptable thickness and weight
The goal is not to choose the most specialized lens available. It is to find the most appropriate combination of frame, lens design, material, and optics for the actual prescription.
How to Order Lenticular Glasses Online at Olet Optical
For a single-vision lenticular prescription, you do not need to request a separate quotation before placing an order. Choose your frame first, then continue through the normal Olet prescription lens process.

Select the eyeglass frame you want. For very strong prescriptions, a reasonably sized frame with good pupil centering is usually a better starting point than an oversized frame. -

Choose this option when you have a prescription from your eye-care professional. -

Select any additional features.
Complete the Additional Features step and choose the options you want included with the finished lenses. -
Complete your order.

For some wearers, appearance also becomes part of the decision, especially when a very strong conventional prescription produces noticeably thick lens edges or centers.
A practical approach is to choose a suitable frame first, then consider whether a conventional high-index lens can produce an acceptable result. If additional control of thickness or weight is still needed, a lenticular design may be worth considering.
